The Italian agricultural landscape is characterised by the remains of ancient monuments. Here we see from above one of the so-called Orlando Towers emerging from the greenery of a hazel grove at Capranica in the province of Viterbo, along the ancient Cassia consular road. These remains are nothing more than two Roman funerary monuments dating back to the 1st century BC and a medieval bell tower (pictured), the only remaining evidence of the ancient Benedictine abbey of Santa Maria in Campis (10th century AD).
