The Italian agricultural landscape characterized by the remains of ancient monuments. Here we see from above one of the so-called Orlando Towers emerging from the greenery of a hazelnut grove in Capranica in the province of Viterbo, along the ancient Cassia consular road. These artefacts are nothing more than two Roman funerary monuments dating back to the 1st century , plus a medieval bell tower, the only remaining evidence of the ancient abbey Santa Maria in Campis. The funerary monument in the photo consists of a square plinth, surmounted by a cylindrical body, with a total height of sixteen metres. Originally it was probably covered with peperino slabs and the niches that can be seen on the surface may have contained bas-reliefs with images of the deceased of the rich roman families.
