Transmission electron micrograph of Adenoviruses, cause of infection to the upper respiratory tract, the symptoms of which resemble a common cold. The virus contains double-stranded (DNA) surrounded by a protein capsid or coat, which is composed of 252 capsomers (subunits seen as tiny ovals) arranged into an icosahedron, or 20-faced figure. Twelve of these capsomers are surrounded by five neighbours and are called pentons. They consist of a base and a stick-like projection (unseen here). Magnification: x215,000 at size.
