There are several varieties of this species, in-cluding var. alta, B. & S., which lives in the farnorth; it is short and broad, with a straight nuttallii, Conr., is found in Alaska and alsoin California as far south as Monterey; the shellis very straight, brilliantly polished, and has avery oblique rib. 94 WEST AMERICAN SHELLS. The shell is small, fragile,and has a short, narrow, and nearly perpendicularrib, or callus. Solen sicdrius,Old., the BluntU a z o r - s h e 11,shown in Figure8 3, is short,slightly curved,and truncated infront as if it had been chopped square off, ^H^iite,with a glossy, yellowish epidermis. This speciesranges from Vancouver Island to San Pedro, rosdceus, Cpr., the Rosy Razor-shell, livesonly in the south. It is two inches long and lessthan half an inch wide, and resembles a small,flattened tube. The shell is straight, rosy whitein color, and is covered with a glossy, horn-coloredepidermis.
