Live steam is admitted to the horizontal cylinders and chambers (left). Via connecting pipework, the pressure created forces the hydraulic, vertical pistons (right) to push down, compressing bales of cotton (or other material) held between the plates below. The resultant compressed bale was easier for handing and transportation.
