The outside is horizontally divided into two friezes, on which alternating cartouches and weapon trophies with guns, banners, armor and drums. The cartouches in the lower zone contain a small representation of a sailing ship (below the hinge), a country house, a walled fortress by the sea, and a landscape with houses, in the upper zone the cartouches are filled with identical garlands. Between each cartouche and trophy is always a shell design with a hanging and a stylized hanging leaf design.

The underside bears a coat of arms with a helmet sign, representing a climbing lion with a sloping beam through which three stars (Nuyts family?). The whole is placed in a wreath of shells and garlands. The lid is decorated with a representation of four classical women, personifications of the liberal arts: in the middle Sculptura who chops a bust, bottom right Architectura (a woman with a compass, sphere and rectangle), possibly standing on the right Geometria with a square, and on the far left an unidentified personification with stick and book.
