. Railway master mechanic [microform] . belt run. This has added a great deaddrag on the engine, has destroyed the belts, heated and groundout the bearings, required frequent changes of babbit andmuch oil, has pulled shafting out of true, has burned quanti-ties of fuel to carry and drive this load and has needed con-stant attention to keep this tension up and wasted time in the doing of it and that of operatives, idle during these stop-pages. But it has been the only alternative. A new method of running belts has been gradually spread-ing, however, and that is the slack or easy running of has been advocated by the Cling-Surface Co. of Buffalo,N. Y., and they haye based their method on the results ofCling-Surface. Cling-Surface is described as a belt and rope filler andpreservative. It is fed to the belt or rope in small quantitiesand makes and keeps it pliable, elastic, water-proof and pre-served. They say it doubles and trebles a belts life. Further-more it stops slipping better than tension can and thereby re-. in many The New Belt Management. moves the necessity for tension. Belts are runningplants slack and easy and carrying full loads. If a belt does not slip it need not be run tight. If it runsslack the dead drag is off and the more it wraps the pulleysthe more it transmits. Bearings keep cool, are not groundout and less oil is used. Belts last longer and need very littleattention and practically no taking-up. Shafting is relievedand fuel is burned only to make power for work and not toovercome friction, while the engine is freed from draggingalong this high friction load. It is very easy to realize the reduction in a plants frictionload which easy belts would make and the economies in theoperation of it and the subject merits careful thought, for itis in these operative savings that the margins are often made. The Cling-Surface Co., of Buffalo, N. Y., have some veryinteresting matter which they are mailing to inquirers. 4 ♦ » Notes of the Month
