Black Hairstreak butterfly (Satyrium pruni) resting on Blackthorn

The Black Hairstreak (Satyrium pruni) is one of Britain's rarest butterflies with a highly restricted range in the East Midlands only. The reason for its rarity is a mystery because its only larval foodplant is the common and widespread Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa). This individual is resting on a leaf of Blackthorn at Glapthorn Wood in Northamptonshire.
