Lava flows overlooking the homes of the town on Heimaey Island, part of the Westman Islands, an archipelago of some 15 islands on the South Coast

Lava flows overlooking homes on the island of Heimaey. The island’s volcano, Eldfell, exploded on January 23, 1973. The island’s entire population evacuated overnight, except for 300 people who stayed behind to fight the lava flow with water hoses.
