Skin tumour. Light micrograph of a section through a xanthogranuloma in skin tissue. This is a tumour that is also called a histiocytoma because of the tissue macrophages (histocytes) that it contains. Macrophages are cells that engulf foreign material as part of the body's defence system. Histiocytes can appear foamy with multiple cell nuclei grouped around foamy cytoplasm (one at lower left). This tumour is generally benign and found in the skin, most commonly on the legs of young and middle-aged women. They can be surgically excised for cosmetic reasons.
