MODEL RELEASED. Thrombosed external haemorrhoid (pile) seen protruding from the anus of a 54 year old man. A thrombosed pile is when, due to a restriction in blood supply, the blood within the pile becomes clotted. This pile has already ruptured and a blood clot can be seen at centre. Piles are common, particularly during pregnancy due to the pressure of the foetus on the veins in the anus. Some people have a congenital weakness of these veins. Mild cases are controlled by drinking plenty of fluids and a high-fibre diet and by establishing regular toilet habits. More severe cases are removed surgically.
