Ancient Bridge, Golik i Sipërm, Korça District

Albania (Shqipëri/Shqipëria in Albanian) declared independence in 1912 and was recognized the following year. In 1944, it became a socialist People's Republic under the leadership of Enver Hoxha and the Party of Labour. Albania experienced widespread social and political transformations during the communist era, as well as isolationism from much of the international community. This was a time when several hundred thousand bunkers were built across the country and monuments were erected to the memory of the “Partisans”. In 1991, the Socialist Republic was dissolved and the Republic of Albania was established. Today’s Albania offers a rich cultural and architectural heritage with a great variety of landscapes. As in most Balkan countries, people are welcoming and festive.
