A sheltered garden on the waterfront in Plockton village, Lcch Carron, palm tree growing, Wester Ross Scottish Highland Scotland

Plockton village, on a bay of Loch Carron in the Northwest of Scotland, is so far north that only a limited range of vegetation would normally be expected to flourish there. However, because it faces northeast and is surrounded by on all sides by heavily wooded hills, it is completely protected from the ferocious prevailing southwesterly winds. Along with the warming influence of the Gulf Stream on the water, this means that the inhabitants of the old terraced cottages lining the main street, whose small gardens give straight onto the harbour, are able to cultivate a much wider range of tender plants than usual, and (judging by the amount of garden furniture) sit out in their gardens much more frequently than you would expect this far north. Looking at the gardens is undoubtedly part of the attraction for the many tourists who visit Plockton.
