In 1829, just before heassumed the reins of the government, he met withthe most terrible affliction of his life in the death ofhis wife, whom he had loved with a devotion which hasperhaps never been surpassed. From the shock ofher death he never recovered. His administration was one of the most memorablein the annals of our country; applauded by one party,condemned by the other. No man had more bitterenemies or warmer friends. At the expiration of histwo terms of office he retired to the Hermitage, wherelie died June 8, 1845.
