St Peter's Saxon Church, Sunderland

Over 1040 leaves of strong vellum were needed for the codex with 200 head of cattle needed to provide the vellum. It weighs around 75lbs. The two monasteries of Monkwearmouth and Jarrow were so closely interlinked that they were thought of as one. Bede was most probably involved in its production. The joint monasteries fell victim to King Henry VIII abolition of the monasteries in 1545.
