ROTARY CONVERTERS The electrical machinery in the sub-stations is all of West-inghouse manufacture. The rotary converters are of the two-bearing type withfield frames divided in a horizontal plane. Each converter isprovided with a starting motor, whose frame is mountedupon an extension of the base of the rotary converter. Thebase frame is set into the floor so that the top of it is level The looo-kw machines have eight poles and operate at 375r. p. m., corresponding to a frequency of 25 cycles per second. The 1500-kw rotaries are rated to deliver 2400 amps, at 625volts, or 2500 amps, at 600 volts. They have twelve poles andrun at 250 r. p. m. In nearly all respects the two sizes of machine are very. FIG. 9.—SUB-STATION AT ROCKAWAY JUNCTION similar. The fields are compound wound with the shuntwinding arranged for self-excitation. The machines are soover-compounded, that if operated as direct-current gen-erators at constant speed, the voltage will rise from 600 voltsat no load to 650 volts at full load. The converters are guar-anteed to stand overloads of more than 2^ times the normalload at 600 volts d. c. without falling out of step, providingthe e. m. f. at the alternating end is maintained within 14per cent, of the normal. Ample provision is made for ven-tilation by passages through the armature core and windingsand also through the field coils. TRANSFORMERSThe transformers used with the converters are of the air-
