Whilst the work of the first restoration was in progress in June1866 the tomb was surreptitiously opened at the back and the remainsof Rahere with sandals on the feet were exposed to view in a woodencoffin. A portion of a sandal, and a small piece of the coffin, wereabstracted and hidden.
