Poppies growing on the ruin of a Roman Fort against a blue sky
In Europe, and especially in Great Britain (England), the poppy is used as a symbol of remembrance commemorating the fallen in wars and other military conflicts. The origin arises from poppies which grew following the Battle of the Somme; poppies often grow in ground which has been disturbed following a long period of inactivity. It is sometimes seen as an embarassment to farmers (inferring neglect of their land).
