Other painters, such as Bastien-Lepage, tried to suggest the openair by an equal diffusion of light on the landscape and the figuresset in it. The painter tried to atone by precision of drawing for theloss of solidity entailed by this monotonous equality. But Bastien-Lepages delicate gradations fade away in the distance like a wellmodulated voice which is too weak to make itself heard save atclose quarters. Frank oppositions of light and colour are necessaryto illuminate a large picture. This refined painter applied the deli-cate execution hitherto reservedfor aristocratic portraits
