Palaeoecology The Cypress Hills Formation lies in the ecotonal zone between the Temperate Unit of the Arcto-Tertiary flora to the North and the Neotropical-Tertiary flora to the south, based on palaeobotanical evidence (see Chaney, 1947; Axelrod, 1958; and map in Kendeigh, 1961, p. 283). The climate of the temperate unit of the Arcto-Tertiary flora is thought to have been humid with extensive summer rainfall, and with moderate temperatures that did not fall below freezing. The Neotropical flora to the south is assumed to have lived in an even more tropical climate. Many elements of the Cypress Hills herpetofauna indicate a subtropical climate. These include the Cone-nosed Toad, Anosteirine Turtle, Land Tortoises, Crocodile, Worm Lizards, and Boas. Two amphibians (Ambystoma tiheni and Scaphiopus skinneri) may be indica- tive of deciduous forest conditions as at least a part of the vegetational complex of Saskatchewan during the early Oligocene, for Amby stoma opacum and Scaphio- pus holbrooki, the most closely related living members of the fossil species, are 25CM. .25CM -25CM Fig. 1 Restorations of amphibians of early Oligocene Cypress Hills fauna, Saskatchewan.
