Tlie recurrence of basal cell epi-thelioma is nearly always in the periphery and usually is seen in cases Radium 121 where radium does not cover sufficient skin area to reach the outlyingcells. Basal cell e[)ithelioma is very often resistant to radium in casesthat have been inadequately treated with the rays or with other thera-peutic agents. In these cases there is usually some degeneration of thetissue or there may be inflammatory tissue which contains no cancercells but will not heal with further radiation. Sometimes, in order tokill all malignant cells in very extensive or deep growths, the massivedoses of rays used may cause a fibrous degeneration in adjacent nor-mal tissues. In all these cases excision or the use of dessication isalways indicated. The pathologists report in a case of advanced epithelioma of the. Fig. 8. Epithelioma of the nose treated :is sliown at left by the implanta-tion of Ave 10 milligram radium needles whicli were left in for three hours. Theresult of the treatment is shown at right. cheek, where there had been deep ulceration which had been treatedwith lethal doses of radium, followed by incomplete healing with aclinical picture of epithelioma, showed presence of only scar tissue andno malignant cells when examined microscopically. This illustratesthat where the cancer cells have all been killed by radiation, leavingchronic inflammatory, fibrous tissue, it is futile to persist in further rad-iation since this only increases the fibrous growth. Complete healing insuch cases can seldom be obtained save by use of electric coagulationor free excision beyond the fibrous margin. It is the concensus of opinion that it is unsafe to curette squamouscell epithelioma before applying radium, as there is too much danger ofproducing metastases. The same is true of electro
