The collateral branches of the common peroneal nerve are three in number. (1) A small nerve to the biceps muscle. (2) A small filament (occasionally absent) that arises about the middle of the thigh and joins the posterior cutaneous sural nerve. (3) The anterior cutaneous sural nerve (n. cutaneus surse anterior (lateralis)), which, dividing into two or three branches, pierces the distal part of the biceps and is distributed to the skin of the lateral surface of the leg.
