By way of still further aid numerous localsanitary fairs were held over the State, andwith the co-operation of the State agriculturalfair of 1863, a State sanitary fair, held at In-dianapolis, raised about $40,000. Altogether thecommission secured in contributions, includingcash and the estimated value of goods, $606, (Terrell). Including contributions bycounties, townships, cities and towns in their cor-porate capacity, the sum given for the relief ofsoldiers and their families amounted to over$5,000,000, besides gifts of which no definiterecord was kept. Relief of Soldiers Families.—The relief ofsoldiers individually and directly was not theonly expression of appreciation and generosityon the part of the citizens of Indiana.
