Orchards of olives and 438 MADEIRA, SPAIN AND ALGIERS almonds all over the hills and the soil a rich red. The effectof the groves of almond trees in full bloom of pale pink flowersagainst the bare stony tops of the Sierra Nevadas, and thedark-grey green of the olives made a color picture well worthtravelling far to see. I dont think the cherry blossoms inJapan can equal GIBRALTAR The beggars swarmed about us at every stop and wewere soon able to understand what they said. I couldvery easily pick up Spanish if I could stay here a fewweeks. All the women (not ladies) that are in the streets andabout the stations wear their hair beautifully coiffed and lookvery neat; only the Moors that we saw were filthy. We passed through Ronda, a beautifully-situated place, 439 EIGHT JOURNEYS ABROAD and considered the most picturesque in Spain. Undoubtedly onthis trip we passed through the most beautiful part of Spain,Andalusia. We also saw San Francisco and Bobadilla; at thelatter town I discovered some fine cakes and smelt the goodcoffee and as we were delayed there Cooks man decided totreat us all to coffee and tea and we had quite a spree. Wegot to Granada at about seven oclock and were taken in car-riages up the high hill to the Hotels which are very near theAlhambra, one facing the other.
