THE UNITED STATES ARMORY. The establishment of a national armory or gun works atSpriuirfield had its inception in au act of congress passed in 177G,by which the suggestion was made that J\Iassachusetts constructan armory at Brookfield for manufacture of arms, cartridges andother nuiuitions of war. It had been the first intention of Gen-eral Washing-ton to found the works at Hartford, but on the rep-resentation of Col. David ]\lason to General Knox that Spring-field was a more suitable location, the act finally designated thattown as the site of the establishment. Colonel Mason had servedas an artillery officer in the last French and English war, and he,under the committee of safety of Massachusetts, collected atSalem the cannon and military stores which the British in 1775sought to capture
