The event was based on the experience of peacekeepers in Africa and the former Soviet Republics. Outside the base Russian communists and nationalists protested American soldiers being on Russian soil during the exercises. Photo shows an armed American soldier sharing his western cigarettes with Russian soldiers who were playing captured hostiles during the peacekeeping exercise.
