File Photo: Peacekeeper 94, Totskoye, Russia. 250 Russia and an equal number of American soldiers took part in the first joint US-Russian military exercises on Russian soil during “Peacekeeper 94” an eight-day event at the Russian military base at Totskoye, Russia, 800 miles (1,280km) southeast of Moscow in September 1994. The event was based on the experience of peacekeepers in Africa and the former Soviet Republics. Outside the base Russian communists and nationalists protested American soldiers being on Russian soil during the exercises. Photo shows an armed American soldier sharing his western cigarettes with Russian soldiers who were playing captured hostiles during the peacekeeping exercise.
