A Chinese ivory figure of Guanyin, 19th century Finely carved from a tusk, partially three-dimensional figure of the Daoist Goddess of Compassion with crowned head, wearing a robe with flowing folds and surrounded by allegoric animals and plants. Beautiful light patina, minuscule tension cracks, crown with small damages. On a carved, square wood stand. Height 89 cm. Guanyin, who is worshipped in all of Eastern Asia as Goddess of Mercy and Compassion, is the female interpretation of the originally male Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara.
