The vigil, which had been organised by more than 22 non-governmental organisations, included representatives of different NGOs and of the Civil Defence, who documented the death of humanitarian workers on duty in Syria. In particular they condemned the bombardment of the northwestern region by the Syrian government and its Russian ally and alleged that humanitarian workers have become a target in their centres and mobile teams during the recent government offensive in the area. The Syrian government has recently stepped up military operations against the Idlib and Hama provinces, which remains the last major opposition stronghold in Syria, with thousands of civilians remaining trapped in the fighting. World Humanitarian Day is held every year on 19 August to pay tribute to aid workers risking their lives in humanitarian service
