The movement was initiated by JeD Stuart, withnine brigades of cavalry, who, by order of General Lee,slipped by the Union Army on the Rappahannock,engaged the Union cavalry, under General Pleasonton,in several fierce fights, and advanced to the lines of theBaltimore and Ohio and Western Maryland the meantime the corps of General Ewell, leavingCulpeper on June 10, crossed the Blue Ridge, andentered the Shenandoah Valley. By a forced march, Ewell reached Winchester onJune 13, where General Milroy, with a comparativelysmall force, detained him until June 15, when Milroyretreated, after spiking his guns. This, and the defeat. Minnesota State, Hancock Ave. of Tyler at Martinsburg, left the Cumberland Valleyopen to the invaders, and they hurried on to Chambers-burg, which they reached and occupied on June 22. Here Ewell divided his forces, sending Rodesand Johnsons Divisions through the valley towardHarrisburg. Carlisle was partially sacked, and part ofthe division advanced as far as Kingston, thirteen milesfrom Harrisburg. Here word was brought that a largeforce of militia had been assembled at Harrisburg,and the Confederates deemed it wiser to return downthe valley. Earlys Division had, in the meantime, crossedthe South Mountain to Emmitsburg, and thence acrosscountry to York. Gordons Brigade met the 26thPennsylvania Regiment, which had been posted atGettysburg when the news of Lees invasion had beenflashed north, near Marsh Creek, a few miles south ofthe town.
