BULLOCK & JONES BUILDING. Third Story, Showing the failure of the hollow tile column protection andthe consequent buckling of two columns. The pipes within the column protection no doubt forced it off when they becameheated and bulged by expansion. A metal lath and plaster partition remains standing on the right-hand side. The concretefloors are in good condition and in place, notwithstanding the settling of the columns and the distortion of the steel beamsand girders. Note also the bulging of the steel beams in the stairway opening, due to unprotected facias. 128. — r^ rn -^ r/j ClJ 8 ^^ -r -i^ ^ E S z;.s:: 0 2 o<i — 3 03 - S o O v^ ^ o o -^P-i a; ce 129 The fire in this building was considcrabl} more severe thanthat which would ordinarily occur in an office building. In thethird story, two columns in the middle of the building arebuckled. All the beams and girders around openings arc bulgedby expanison. In the second floor two arches adjoining a stairopening failed from this cause. In the eighth story, one of thelattice channel colunms is buckled. Two small columns sup-porting the roof of the pent house are badly sprung. With the exception of the few arches that failed on accountof the displacement of the steel supports, the rest of the con-crete floors are in first-class condition. The expanded metal andplaster enclosures of the elevator shaft and stairway are stand-ing, but are considerably bulged and out of line in some places. The 3 hollow tile column protection is ruptured in manyplaces, and a large proportion of it has fallen away
