After Louis XVI of France was guillotined, his son succeeded him as Louis XVII, pictured in confinement with the shoemaker Simon

After Louis XVI of France was guillotined, his son succeeded him as King Louis XVII. He was seven years old when his parents were imprisoned. Tradition said he was kept confined and placed under the care of the shoemaker Simon, pictured here. DNA results now offer evidence that he died in prison in 1795.
