Mk 2 grenade, artwork. This grenade was used by the US Army between 1918 and the 1960s. It is a fragmentation grenade, with the casing designed to shatter upon the detonation of the high explosive inside. A safety pin prevents the grenade detonating. A ring-pull is used to remove the pin, with the spring lever (right) held in place by the soldier's hand. Once released when thrown, a timed delay of 5 seconds precedes detonation.
