The variations not only among theseveral departments but also among the various teachers withinparticular departments are notable. The summarizing table anddiagram (Table LI 11 and Diagram LXXVI) are especially in-teresting. From these it is to be observed that the general aver-age of the entire school for the four years compiled is: Passed,; conditioned, ; not passed, The depart-ment of German has the greatest pupil mortality, only percent Of all persons electing the subject being given a passingmark and per cent being failed outright. On the otherhand, relatively few who have elected work in science have beenheld back from promotions, per cent of the pupils pursuingthe
