. The American florist : a weekly journal for the trade. Floriculture; Florists. 490 The American Florist. Aprilzs, formed at this time will not have time to develop into flowers by the time the plants are thrown out. J. Florists' Plant Notes. PYRETHRUM. For cheap bunches of flowers, the old pyrethrum or common feverfew will be found useful. These should now have their flowering pots, a 5-inch or 6inch. Unless in your judgment the plants are plenty early enough, do not top them any more, for this will throw them fully two weeks later. ASTILBES. Astilbes for Memorial day do not require any forcing to have them in bloom on time. Give the plants plenty of room on a light bench in a night tem- perature of 50°, and place a saucer under each pot, keeping the saucer filled with liquid manure. No insects trouble them, so let no tobacco smoke get near them, for it burns the foliage. PANSIES. Pansies should have the benefit of all the air you can give them nowadays. On every warm, bright day the sash should be removed entirely, or the plants will grow soft and spindly. Syringe them frequently, and water with weak liquid manure twice a week from now on. The first of May is usually the time the pansy trade begins, and it is safe to rec- ommend them to your customer if he desires to plant up his beds before it is time to set out geraniums or other spring plants. They can stand all the frosts vre will have after this without protection. HYDRANGEAS. Give the hydrangeas for Memorial day plenty of room from now on or they will quickly draw up and lose their lower foliage. Copious waterings twice a day will be found necessary to keep them from wilting and manure water should be applied regularly twice a week. Fumigate regularly until the buds begin to show color, and give plenty of fresh air, keeping them as near to 50° at night as possible, unless you are late, in which case the temperature may be increased 5°. The cooler you grow them the stronger will your plants be. If you had
