Tamoxifen breast cancer drug packaging. Tamoxifen is a selective oestrogen receptor modulator (SERM) that blocks oestrogen production in breast tissue by inhibiting oestrogen-related receptor gamma (ERR-gamma). As some breast cancer cells require oestrogen to grow, using tamoxifen to block oestrogen production can help prevent the cancer spreading. It is also taken as a drug of abuse by male bodybuilders, as it prevents the gynaecomastia (male breast growth) caused by steroid drugs taken to build muscle mass.
