There is, however, no authentic recordof the fact, and some maintain that it was worked by threeBayeux men in London during the reign of William, andsent by them as an offering to their native cathedral. Thisclaim rests on the poorness of the materials used. Otherauthorities believe it to be the product of the twelfth, andnot of the eleventh century. Whatever its exact origin, it isundoubtedly of great antiquity, and is one of the earliest number of colours used there is little variety in theshading. The original, after being for many years hung inBayeux cathedral, was removed to Paris in the time of thefirst Napoleon, and is now preserved in the public libraryat Bayeux.
