Light micrograph of spores from the fungus Trichosporon sp. Spores are fungal reproductive units, also known as conidia. Members of this fungal genus commonly occur on human skin and are not harmful under normal conditions. In some cases, especially in high humidity, they can cause a harmless but unpleasant skin infection which has symptoms visually similar to dandruff. This can be treated with antifungal shampoos, or by shaving the affected hair.
