Kashmiri women walk past the blooming lotus flowers floating in the interiors of the world famous Dal lake during a hot summer day in Srinagar. Lotus flowers bloom in Kashmir during the months of July and August in the floating gardens of Dal Lake. The flowers and leaves can rise up to four feet from the water's surface on their slender stalks. The lotus root, also known as Nadru or Nelumbo nucifera is a delicacy eaten by the people of Kashmir. The stems are also harvested and used in the local cuisine.
