View SE of the remains of the C15th gatehouse to the Benedictine abbey of Ramsey, Cambridgeshire, England, UK. The original abbey was founded in 969 on what was then an island in the Fens. The body of St Ives (St Ivo) a Persian bishop who came to England & lived as a hermit, was translated here in 1001, also the relics of St Felix of Burgundy & Dunwich. The abbey was Dissolved in 1537 & given to Richard Cromwell (great-grandfather of Oliver) who removed the central (outer) part of the gatehouse to the Cromwell family seat at Hinchingbrooke Hall. The original, removed gateway was on the R of my photo, the gateway on L with a bell turret is early C19th by Sir John Soane. The remaining portion of the gatehouse & lodge was given to the National Trust in 1952 by Major the Hon. Henry Broughton in memory of his wife Diana. In the grounds of Abbey College, Ramsey, a secondary academy school.
