The stripe is most marked in specimens from localities on the Western Slope at relatively low elevations (for ex- ample, Coventry and Crawford). Specimens from the San Luis Valley typically show a fine gray fine on the tail, and those from the Park Range and environs are generally without a caudal stripe, or with a pale gray stripe only. Probably those animals from the central part of the state are best considered to be inter- grades between the rather different subspecies of the Great Plains and the northern part of the Great Basin. A broad zone of intergrada- tion is to be expected, for the high mountains of central Colorado are a weak barrier to a species with such broad ecological amplitude. The line between ranges of the two subspecies in figure 37 is placed arbitrarily along the Continental Divide.
