Barratt Homes 'Renaissance development rises like a concrete cliff, along Loampit Vale, Lewisham

Barratt Homes was selected via a competition by Lewisham Council, as their development partner to develop their proposals for the site at Loampit Vale. In 2008 Barratt Homes proposed a regeneration scheme for Renaissance in partnership with the London Borough of Lewisham and London & Quadrant Housing Trust. Following discussions with local residents and key statutory bodies such as the Greater London Authority (GLA) and the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE), the scheme was redesigned. The proposals for Renaissance embrace 21st Century urban living and will deliver an exciting future for Lewisham. This mixed-use development will provide: a new leisure centre which will achieve BREEAM ‘Excellent’ standard, incorporating a 25-metre competition swimming pool, gym, café, crèche, health spa and indoor climbing wall, 788 new homes, of which 149 are affordable, Residential units achieving Code 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes, Commercial, business and retail units, Creative industries, New public open spaces and piazzas, Energy centre and green roofs, New facilities for the London City Mission Unfortunately, this scheme is biased towards high-rise structures which do not suit the surrounding area, and were the subject of considerable local opposition. The buildings are turning Loampit vale into a canyon as the concrete cliffs rise-up along the Vale. The Labour Government gave £ to Barratt Homes to allow this inappropriate development at Loampit Vale to proceed.
