Old man and child in Beslan, North Ossetia, Russia, shortly after a terrorist attack on the town's school No. 1 that resulted in hundreds of deaths. A group of heavily armed terrorists demanded that Russian troops pull back from the republic of Chechnya. They took over a thousand school children and their teachers hostage in the school on the 1st of September, 2004. Hundreds of hostages, including 186 children, died when Russian forces stormed the school on the 3rd of September. Altogether 334 people were killed during the three days of the hostage drama.
