Johann Bernoulli. Portrait of Johann Bernoulli (1667-1748), Swiss mathematician. He studied originally in medicine, but decided to follow mathematics after he graduated. He became professor at Groningen in 1695. His work largely concerned differential equations, and in particular their relevance to curves (as he is holding in the picture). His elder brother, Jacques, worked in the same areas, and they often argued and bickered over problems. After his brother's death in 1705, he took over as professor at the university of Basle. He was also a powerful voice in favour of Leibniz in the dispute with Newton over the invention of calculus.
