Old wooden, wind powered, limestone scrubbing mill (for polishing limestone), Jordhamn, island of Öland, Sweden.


The wind turned sails turn the central post (see picture LGPL 6210 01 11 for gearing). Arms project from the base of the post, and limestone sheets, attached to the ends of these, are dragged round over a "polishing surface". These mills emerged circa 1860, with design attributed to Olof Petter Nilsson (1825 to 1895). At the start of the 20 th century there were 30 mills of this type on Öland. Mechanical polishing commenced in 1930s.
