Adenomas.—The endometrium of the cervical canal isfurnished with numerous racemose glands. Adenomas, which are structurally repetitions of these glands, are verycommon at the neck of the uterus; they may be sessileor pedunculated. A sessile adenoma appears as a soft velvety areolaaround the os; it is in colour like a ripe strawberry, andthickly dotted with minute spots of a brighter pink. This. Fig. 176.—Tubular glands of the corporeal endometrium in transverse section. pink tissue is composed of glandular acini lined with large, regular, columnar epithelium (Fig. 175). The glandular tissueoften extends beyond the margins of the os and invades thevaginal portion of the cervix. Sometimes it is so abundantthat the apex of the cervix, instead of being a cone, assumesrather the shape of the under surface of a mushroom. Theglandular mass is not confined to the margins of the os, butextends for a variable distance up the canal. When adenomaaffects a lacerated cervix the whole of the exposed portion ofthe canal is involved. The surface of a sessile adenoma is 374 EPITHELIAL TUMOURS covered witli tenacious mucus secreted by the abnormalglands. Pedunculated adenomas are rarely large : they may growfrom any part of the cervical canal, but are most frequentlyfound springing from the lower 2 cm. of
