Trinidad is the most perfectly preserved colonial city in Cuba and is a UNESCO world heritage site. The city was one of the seven original settlements founded by Diego Velazquez in 1514-1515. It grew as a centre of pirates and smuggling. In the eighteenth century it became the heart of the sugar boom in main square the Plaza Mayor is the centre of the colonial section of Trinidad. The Museo Romantico is in what was the Brunet family home. It was built in 1808 for one of Trinidad's wealthiest families during the sugar boom of the nineteenth century
