The paper on Recommended Prac-tice was then read in abstract by thechairman of the committee on this sub-ject, Mr. S. G. Down, and it occupiedthe attention of the members for therest of the day. This paper is perhaps one of the mostimportant which the association has Drapers absence the paper was read byMr. F. B. Farmer. After a brief dis-cussion touching upon the use of com-pressed air for water-taising systems, bell ringers, sandcrs, simpling devicesfor compound locomotives, et cetera, thepaper on Hand Brakes for Freight andPassenger Cars on Mountain GradeService, by Mr. Mark Purcell, chair-man of the committee on this subject, was read by Mr. F. B. Farmer. The discussion which followed broughtout the fact that the brake beam re-lease spring was often responsible forpoor hand brakes, as well as many. AIR BUAKE CONV W. C. Hunter, and about all the causesimaginable of brake pipe leakage werebrought out by the members participat-ing. The pulling apart of hose and thepoor fit of the hose gaskets were amongthe leading causes cited of brake pipeleakage, while in very cold climates therigidity of the hose contributed verylargely to the trouble. Then came Mr. C. B. Conger on theHose Coupling, which made a strongplea for a better hand method of hosecoupling. It also brought out the star-tling fact that the practice of pullinghose apart when parting cars costssome of our large systems about thirtydollars per year per car, because of thedamage to hose alone, not to speak ofthe annoyances such a practice bringsabout in the way of increased brakepipe leakage. The paper recommendedthe designing and adoption of a handcoupling that will pull apart withoutdamage to the hose. ENTION, COLUMBUS, OHI
