Fungal skin infection. Light micrograph of a section through skin infected with Madurella sp. fungus. This condition is known as Madura foot and mycetoma pedis. The fungus enters through a small cut or scratch. It causes subcutaneous swellings that fill with pus and form sinus tracts (one at bottom left) that break through the skin's surface. The inflammation can also affect deeper tissues, including bone. The disease is endemic in many tropical and sub-tropical regions.
