Such aheadband, made of sealskin pro-cured from the Eskimo, is shownin Fig. 1(1] (No. 3440). Theheadband is used to supjiort theweight of a load carried on theback, relic^ving the strain on theshoulders and making it easierto breathe. The band passesover the forehead to the back,where it is attached to the forms of these head-bands or portage straps aremade. Sometimes a piece ofbirch bark is placed under thestrap where it touches the fore-head.
