Valle Crucis Abbey, Llangollen, Wales, UK, detail of the graveslab of Madog ap Gruffudd (d. 1301), great-grandson of the abbey founder. Abbey founded 12 January 1201 by Madoc ap Gruffydd Maelor the ruler of Powys with 13 Cistercian monks & several lay-brothers from the abbey of Strata Marcella near Welshpool. The graveslab, carved with foliage & bunches of fruit, a vertical spear, a diagonal sword & a shield with lion rampant, lay in the church before the high altar. It is now in the monks' dormitory on the first floor of the E range. The inscription around the shield reads: "Here lies Madog son of Gruffudd called Fychan". This Madog was also the great-grandfather of Owain Glyndwr. Abbey named Valle Crucis (Valley of the Cross) after the C9th Eliseg's Pillar a little to the north.
